SEO stands for Search Engines Optimization while SMM stands for Social Media Marketing. Comparing the two seem needless but considering the end goal state of the duo, there is a great necessity to compare both SEO and SMM to establish which is which and when is each needed. Thus, the two are aim at generating leads to a business from an internet source which might be search engines or social media platforms.
Before going into the full comparison of both SEO and SMM, let us look into their meanings.
SEO involves strategic management of a website to corresponds with the technical requirements from the major search engines such that the targeted website receive greater hits from the search engines. It involves tactics at integrating the technical policies, rules and regulations of the search engines on a website for mutual experience between search engines and the targeted website.
Leads or traffic received by a website from a successful SEO practice is free and never paid. Don't be confused, when you see sponsored links on search engines like google, that's not SEO, it is Search Engines Marketing (SEM). SEO involves every strategic step taken by a webmaster to maximize the visibility of a website on the Search Engines Result Page (SERP) when users are searching for contents or services related to the ones being provided by the targeted website.
Seo involves effective presentation of a website before the Search Engines Providers including Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, Ask and the likes.
SMM is an act of paying for generating leads to a website or business by promoting the website or business on any of the social media platforms. SMM involves any sponsored strategy that increases the chances of a website or business to be seen on a particular social media platform. SMM is usually paid.
When a website link is shared on a Facebook Page, Twitter Handle, WhatsApp messenger, Linkedln, Instagram or any of the thousands social media platforms and payment is made for increasing or ensuring the campaign reach a targeted goal state, this is called SMM.
Looking into the explanation of what is what in the meaning of SEO and SMM, one could conveniently deduce on the following differences between SEO and SMM.
While SEO, solely target generating leads (clicks through) to a targeted website, SMM might also generate leads click through, sales) to either a website or a business with physical location.
SEO is generally free, meaning the search engines providers are not billing the webmaster for taking the advantages of SEO while SMM is paid, meaning the webmasters or business owner needs to pay certain amount of money to the Social Media Owner before they could tap from the advantages of SMM.
On which gives reward on investment first? Definitely, SMM is instantaneous in reward than the crawling SEO. This implies, while SMM begins to produce traffic seconds after the campaign is launched, seo might takes months before it starts to give reasonable traffic.
Mostly, this is the different that everyone would want to hear. While traffic generated by SEO is most reliable, long term and continuous in effect, traffic generated by SMM is short term, unreliable and dies as the campaign sponsorship expires.
Also, SEO brings lucrative recommendations and quality backlinks to a website while SMM rarely bring backlinks, least we talk of recommendations from the high authority websites.
Juxtaposing both the SEO and SMM, one could beautifully conclude that both SEO and SMM bring traffic to a website but SEO is more reliable than SMM. SMM's result is more instantaneous, though.
